The parking is the easy part
South Woodford is a rare east London job where parking rarely holds us up. Most of the 1930s semis and Edwardian houses have a driveway or an off-street space, so the van goes on the drive and we carry the tank a few steps. The permit and pay-and-display bays near George Lane and the Central line station are the busier bit, but away from the station the residential roads are quiet. The M11 starts here, just north of Redbridge Roundabout where it meets the North Circular, so we reach E18 quickly from either direction.
Bigger houses, bigger cookers
The cooker mix here skews larger than most of our patch. The bay-fronted semis around George Lane usually have a freestanding 60cm or a built-in double, which is the £77 single or the £110 double. In the detached houses on the Monkhams Estate, the Firs and the roads off Hermon Hill, a 90cm range or a two-oven AGA turns up far more than it does in a flats postcode, and those are the £114 and £143 jobs. Whatever the cooker, the racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and soak in the heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so no chemical smell is left, and the oven is heat-tested before we leave.

Who books us in E18
Most E18 work is owner-occupiers, families in the same house for years who want the oven done before Christmas or after a heavy roasting season, rather than the constant tenancy churn of the inner-east postcodes. Prices are the same as everywhere we go, no premium for an affluent street and no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
