South Woodford station opened on 22 August 1856 as George Lane. It was renamed South Woodford (George Lane) in 1937 and became a Central line station on 14 December 1947.
George Lane, the station and the viaduct
George Lane was one of the few old roads across the parish, joining South Woodford to the lower road. The George, on the corner with the High Road, was recorded as the Horns inn in 1657. When the railway came, the lane crossed it on the level just north of the station; that crossing was later closed, and traffic now goes over what the council's own car park list calls the George Lane Viaduct.

Elmhurst, at 98 High Road, is a three-storey brick house of the late 18th century, listed Grade II in 1954. In 1969 three tower blocks went up in its grounds. The area was home to student residences of Queen Mary, University of London until 2004, the tower blocks were pulled down in 2007, and the flats of Queen Mary's Gate, mostly private with some council homes, replaced them.

Parking in zone STHWP round George Lane
Redbridge's South Woodford zone (STHWP) covers George Lane and the streets round the station, such as Eastwood Road, Cleveland Road, Grove Hill and Bedford Road, with controls from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Queen Mary Avenue sits outside the council's zones on its map. In a zone, the van needs one of your visitor permits for the whole visit. The free hour in an on-street pay and display bay runs out before even a single is finished, so it is no help here.
