South Wimbledon station, on the corner of Merton High Street and Morden Road, opened on 13 September 1926; it was to have been called Merton Grove, and Charles Holden's stone box is now Grade II listed.
Streets on Nelson's old estate
Much of the ground north of the High Street once belonged to Merton Place, the house Lord Nelson shared with Lady Hamilton. After his death at Trafalgar she ran into debt, the estate was sold, and the empty house was pulled down in 1823. The street names kept the memory: Merton's character study notes that Victory Road and Trafalgar Road allude to Nelson, and Nelson Road, Hardy Road and Hamilton Road lie beside them. Merton's character study describes them as late Victorian terraces of two storeys in yellow London stock, with half bays, arched porches and small front gardens, set out in a grid. Rose Cottage on Hamilton Road is older, a Georgian villa of 1813.
A two-storey terrace of that age usually keeps its kitchen at the back, often in a narrow rear addition, with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker against one wall. The racks, trays and side runners come out of that small room and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
High Path and the newer flats
South of the High Street, the artisan cottages of Nelson Fields were cleared for the council's High Path estate, built between 1951 and 1977: four-storey courtyard blocks near St John the Divine and three 12-storey towers. Clarion Housing Group, the freeholder, holds outline permission (ref 17/P1721) to rebuild it, and Merton's Local Plan expects the work to go on in phases over about 15 years, with a new public park facing Merton High Street.
In the small Census area around High Path (Merton 012A), the 2021 count found three households in four living in a purpose-built block of flats, and more than half renting from the council or a housing association.
In a block, a built-in single under the worktop takes about 90 minutes; a double in a tall housing takes about two hours.

Parking zones S1, S2 and S3
Merton's South Wimbledon zones run long hours. On the council's zone page, S1 and S2 are controlled Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 6.30pm and S3 the same hours on weekdays only. The Nelson streets (Nelson, Hardy, Hamilton, Victory and Trafalgar Roads) are all in S2, S1 takes in streets west of the station that Merton's Local Plan calls the Australias (Melbourne Road, Brisbane Avenue and Queensland Avenue are on its list), and the 1980s All Saints estate (All Saints Road and East Road) is in S3. The team needs somewhere to park, so a street name when you book is a help.
