South Stifford began as a township of the 1890s: the railway branch from Grays to Upminster opened in 1892, heavy industry grew up along the line between West Thurrock and Grays, and by 1894 there was a township at South Stifford.
A railway township off London Road
Until then Stifford was a rural parish with few people. Its population, 320 in 1851, had barely moved by 1881; with the new township it reached 1,067 in 1901 and 2,188 in 1931. The Victoria County History says the township grew slowly over its first 30 years. A Baptist mission opened in Foxton Road in 1900 and bought its building in 1908. St Mary's began in 1920 as an iron mission church on Moore Avenue. In the 1953 floods, when neighbouring parishes were hit, South Stifford was a distribution centre for relief.

Private renters made up 23.4%, ahead of the Thurrock share of 18.3%, and 10.4% rented from the council or a housing association.

No South Stifford road is on Thurrock Council's list of roads in each parking zone. Heading east, Grays Zone A, which runs Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, begins on London Road at Hogg Lane, over a kilometre from Foxton Road.
