Until the 1930s South Ockendon was a village round a green on the Brentwood to Grays road. The Victoria County History, written in the 1970s, names the Royal Oak as the oldest building on the green apart from St Nicholas church, which stands to its south-east; the pub's north cross-wing is late medieval.
The London County Council estate and after
In the 1930s the London County Council began an estate between the railway and South Street. After the Second World War it was greatly enlarged and spread west of the railway into Belhus Park, in the parish of Aveley. The parish of South Ockendon had no more than 1,355 people in 1931; the Ockendon ward of Thurrock Urban District had 4,164 by 1951 and 4,733 by 1961. After the war prefabs also went up here for London families bombed out in the Blitz, and the old South Ockendon Hospital, which grew out of a farm colony at Little Mollands and closed in 1994, is now the Brandon Groves estate.
The 2021 Census for Ockendon ward counted 4,643 households. Terraced houses were the biggest group at 38.4%, and 24.0% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Over a quarter (26.4%) rented from a social landlord, most of them from Thurrock Council, and 11.8% rented privately.
Compact kitchens, freestanding or built in
Council-built terraces and flats of the post-war decades often have a narrow kitchen with either a 60cm freestanding cooker or a built-in single under the worktop. Either way the cleaning is the same. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.

Permit parking in South Ockendon
Thurrock Council's South Ockendon permit parking area has restrictions Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm. It takes in Tamarisk Road, the closes named after plants (Celandine, Larkspur, Rosemary, Viola), Mayflower Close, Nicholas Close and parts of South Road and West Road. The team still needs somewhere to park near the door, and outside those hours and at weekends the restriction does not apply.
