Side streets on an old estate and an old canal
Behind the High Street, Whitworth Road and Oliver Grove were among the main roads of the Victorian Selhurst Park Estate; Whitworth Road was laid out in the late 1870s by Earle Bird, and Oliver Grove once had four gate piers at its entrance, two of which now stand at the Recreation Ground. Albert Road was built in 1855, and the curving streets of Sunny Bank, once called Frog Island, follow the bed of the Croydon Canal, which closed in 1836. Arthur Conan Doyle lived at 12 Tennison Road from 1891 to 1894.
These streets are a mix of 19th-century terraces and semi-detached houses. In a terraced house the parts come out through the hall and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.

South Norwood's parking zone and the Portland Road bays
Streets around the centre are in Croydon's South Norwood permit zone. When the council extended it along Albert Road in 2021, the notice gave the single yellow line restrictions there as 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with no pay-by-phone charge on Sundays. The zone's own hours are on the signs at its entrances. It counts as an outer zone, so a resident's half-day visitor permit costs less than in central Croydon.
On Portland Road the first hour in the bays is free, but a parking session is still needed and the stay is capped at two hours. That covers a single oven, which takes about 90 minutes. A 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours, which is longer than the cap, so tell us the street and what the signs there say when you book.
