St Albans Road was completed in about 1828 to take the St Albans to London traffic round South Mimms; until then it ran through the village along Blanche Lane and Greyhound Lane.
The old village along Blanche Lane
Hertsmere's 2024 appraisal of the conservation area dates the village's older cottages and houses from the 16th to the 19th century. 60 Blanche Lane, a timber-framed house of the late 17th century with a later brick front, looks onto the strip of village green that splits Blanche Lane in two. The 19th century was quiet: the village had 174 houses in 1871 and only 200 by 1901, and most of the cottages added in the 19th century were of yellow stock brick. North of St Giles' Church are the Brewers' Almshouses. They were founded at Kitts End in 1687 and moved here in 1856, and since a 1990 refurbishment the single-storey row has been three houses.
The 20th century filled in the gaps. St Giles Avenue, on the east side of St Albans Road, went up in 1912-1914 on land owned by the Reverend Allen Hay of St Giles Church, and more houses followed along St Albans Road in the 1930s and 1960s. Frowycke Crescent, behind the east side of Blanche Lane, and Hamilton Close are larger 20th-century developments.
Small homes in the village
The three Census output areas that cover the village houses on Blanche Lane, Hamilton Close, Brookside and the northern part of St Albans Road held 711 residents in 315 households in 2021. Of those households, 23.2% had a single bedroom and 13.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats; 22.9% rented from a housing association.
A one-bedroom flat usually has a built-in single oven, sometimes a compact freestanding cooker, and not much floor space around it. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the work at the oven itself is the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass, degreased by hand on dust sheets.
The village is north of the motorway junction
The M25 passes the west side of South Mimms and the A1(M) the east, and the two meet at Bignell's Corner, south of the village. The council's appraisal makes the point that the motorway services sharing the name are separate from the village. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
