The parish counted 874 people at the 2021 census, 661 of them in the village built-up area. This is Hertfordshire, not a London suburb
When Greater London was drawn up in 1965 the urban district of Potters Bar, which contained the parish of South Mimms, was handed to Hertfordshire instead, while most of the rest of Middlesex was pulled into the capital. The village sits in the borough of Hertsmere, and since 2023 in the merged civil parish of South Mimms and Ridge. We cover it seven days.
Blanche Lane holds the old village
The conservation area was designated in 1998 and follows the linear development along Blanche Lane, running from the thirteenth-century church of St Giles, which is Grade I listed, down to the small village green and westwards as far as the M25. Its streets are Blanche Lane, St Albans Road, Greyhound Lane, Cecil Road and Hamilton Close. A 2024 revision brought in Hazeldene, Hazelmere, Ingham Lodge and Cedar Lodge, named houses rather than numbered terraces, which is the shape of much of the housing here. The Black Horse on Blackhorse Lane is Grade II listed and dates to the 1700s.
There is no ULEZ line to cross
South Mimms is outside Greater London, so the London-wide ULEZ that took in all 32 boroughs on 29 August 2023 stops short of the village, no congestion charge, no controlled parking zone to feed. The van parks and the heated tank stays in it. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to soak, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested before it is signed off. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
