For six months South Merton was the end of the line: the station opened as a temporary terminus on 7 July 1929, and trains only ran on to Sutton from January 1930. When Parliament approved the line in 1910, the station was to be called Merton Park, after the estate to the north and a golf course to the south that has since been built over.
Martin Way and the 1930s roads off it
The station is beside Martin Way. Merton's character study for Cannon Hill says Martin Way was laid out in 1923 along the old Green Lane, across what had been Merton Common, and that houses lined both sides by the late 1930s. Just south of the station, Maycross Avenue and the roads round it are mostly 1930s semis with a few bungalows and terraces, and grass verges with street trees. Heyford Avenue has three-storey blocks of flats, and the shopping parades on Martin Way are two and three storeys. The two locally listed churches on Martin Way, the Methodist church and St James, both went up in the 1950s and have copper-clad spires.
In the census area that includes Heyford Avenue and part of Maycross Avenue, 35.5% of the 612 households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census, 25.2% in a purpose-built flat and 24.8% in a semi; 3.6% lived in a commercial building, a Census category that includes a flat over a shop. 30.0% rented privately. A 1930s semi has often been refitted since, so its oven might be a built-in double or a single under the worktop; a flat over a shop more often has a compact cooker and a stair.

Mostyn Gardens, east of the line
A few minutes' walk north-east of the station, Mostyn Gardens is a 10-acre recreation ground on the brickfield that supplied John Innes while he built Merton Park; the site was later the local tip before it became a park, with sunken gardens and play areas. Poplar Primary School, which first opened in 1932, backs onto it. The southern end of Mostyn Road, beside the station, is in Merton Park ward, while the station and Heyford Avenue are in Cannon Hill ward; the Merton Park page covers the roads further north.
Whatever the cooker, the routine is the same. Dust sheets go down first. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

South Merton oven cleaning questions
Is my address SM4, SW20 or SW19?
All three meet here: Maycross Avenue is SM4, the south end of Mostyn Road is SW19, and Heyford Avenue has SW20 postcodes. The price does not change.
We are on Maycross Avenue in zone CH. Does that rule out a weekday?
No, but the bays are permit-only from 8.30am to 6.30pm, so tell us about a visitor permit or a drive. A Saturday or Sunday costs the same.
Can you clean the oven in a flat above a Martin Way shop?
Yes. Mention the stairs when you call.

Said after the sign-off
Once again a great job guys, I will see you in a couple of months.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
