In 1876 the economist Walter Bagehot moved into No. 8 Queen's Gate Place and called in William Morris's firm to redecorate it. Morris worked on the drawing room himself, and the job was still unfinished when Bagehot died the following year.
Charles Aldin's houses between Queen's Gate and Gloucester Road
The builder of much of the ground round it was Charles Aldin. The grandson of an Uxbridge carpenter, he seems to have started in 1845 on one of Thomas Cubitt's Pimlico developments; in 1859 he was said to have upward of 400 men at work. He and his sons built over 200 large houses and almost as many mews dwellings, most of them in the rectangle between Queen's Gate Terrace, Gloucester Road, Cromwell Road and Queen's Gate. At the corner of Queen's Gate Place, the four double-fronted houses at Nos. 1 to 4 were finished between 1862 and 1866. The usual house in these streets, the Survey of London says, has five storeys over a basement and is three windows wide, on a frontage of 24 to 28 feet.
Where the kitchen was in a Queen's Gate house
The service rooms were all in the basement, reached from the street by stone steps down into the area, with vaults under the pavement. The main kitchen and scullery were often right at the back, below the rear wing, lit by a big skylight, and a separate servants' stair climbed through the house. Many of these houses have since been divided.
In the census area round Queen's Gate Place (Kensington and Chelsea 010E), 34.7% of the 640 households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house and 53.2% in a purpose-built block; 57.8% rented privately and 36.6% owned. A lower-ground flat may still cook close to where the old kitchen was, with the area steps as the way out. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets. Parking between Queen's Gate and the station
Kensington and Chelsea's single yellow line map draws a line through South Kensington. Queen's Gate, Queen's Gate Place, Stanhope Gardens and Harrington Road are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturdays.
