Between 1879 and 1913 the south-west corner of the Maryon Wilson estate filled with seven roads running across from Finchley Road towards Priory Road: Goldhurst Terrace, Canfield, Broadhurst, Fairhazel, Greencroft, Compayne and Aberdare Gardens.
Seven roads built between 1879 and 1913
Charles Kellond began Goldhurst Terrace with 20 houses in 1879, and another 50 followed by 1885. Between 1886 and 1900 came 101 houses, some flats and a riding school, mostly by T. K. Wells of Kentish Town. Broadhurst Gardens got 116 houses between 1882 and 1894. On Compayne Gardens the local builders James Tomblin and E. Michael put up 77 houses and three blocks of flats from 1886 to 1894, and Tomblin built most of Aberdare Gardens, the last of the roads, between 1893 and 1897.
The district was middle-class by about 1890, and the houses have mostly been split up since. In the 1970s the Fairhazel Gardens area was known for young, often single professionals moving into converted flats. When Sir Percy Maryon-Wilson died in 1965, Camden twice tried to buy the freeholds between Broadhurst Gardens, Fairhazel Gardens and Goldhurst Terrace, with a tenants' association behind it; the government vetoed both attempts, and in 1972 the freeholds went to Bryston Property Group.
A ward created in 2022
South Hampstead became a Camden ward at the 2022 review, made from parts of the old Swiss Cottage, Kilburn and West Hampstead wards. At the 2021 Census 41.2% of its households lived in converted or shared houses and 49.3% in purpose-built flats, with only 7.1% in a whole house. 47.4% rented privately, 20.6% rented social housing and 30.5% owned. Some of the social housing dates from after the war: Broadhurst Gardens was badly bombed, and 168 council flats by Richard Nickson were finished there in 1956.
A flat carved out of a house like these often has a compact kitchen fitted into one of the old rooms, up a shared stair. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, on dust sheets. With nearly half the homes let privately, letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name and photos for the checkout file.

Two parking zones with different hours
On Camden's zone data Broadhurst, Canfield, Greencroft and Compayne Gardens each change zone along their length. The eastern part, nearer Finchley Road, is in CA-R(b), Swiss Cottage: controlled from 8.30am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday. The western part, towards West End Lane, is in CA-R(a), controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays only. A visitor permit is for a resident's own guests, and tradespeople come under Camden's trade permit. Give us the house number, because the two ends of one road can keep different hours.

In CA-R(b) only Sunday is free of controls. In the western part, in CA-R(a), Saturday is free as well. Weekends cost the weekday price.
How long does a single oven take?
About 90 minutes on site. A double takes about 2 hours and a 90cm range 2 to 3.
Is South Hampstead the same place as Swiss Cottage?
