Victoria Park opened in 1845 as London's first public park, and the housing followed it: stock-brick terraces, the church of St John of Jerusalem in 1848, the French Hospital in 1865, and light industry down by the Regent's Canal. Hackney designated the Victoria Park conservation area in 1977 to cover most of the historic buildings fronting the park and Well Street Common, and it added a separate Well Street conservation area on 19 July 2021, centred on the old route between Mare Street and Homerton and its three-storey mid-nineteenth-century terraces.
Grand terraces, mostly divided into flats
The mid-Victorian houses around Lauriston Road and facing the park are among the best-preserved in east London, and a lot of them are now split into flats. That is what shapes the work. A house built for one family, cut into two or three, puts a kitchen in a back room or a rear extension, usually with one built-under oven at £77 and a separate hob at £23–28 above it. Where a whole house has stayed whole and been refitted, a 90cm range at £114 is the likelier find, and a two-oven AGA is £143.
Old rooms, tight kitchens, no caustic indoors
A conversion kitchen in a period house is often a small room with one window and a door to the hall. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van and soak there. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell afterwards, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go. A single takes about ninety minutes and a double about two.

Do the conservation area rules stop you doing anything?
No. Designation controls what happens to the outside of the building. It has nothing to say about the inside of your cooker.
Is E9 inside your no-call-out-fee area?
Yes. There is no call-out fee anywhere inside the North and South Circular, and no premium for the postcode either.
Can you take the oven door apart to do the inner glass?
Where the design allows, yes, and we clean the inner faces. Some sealed doors cannot be split safely, and we will tell you that rather than force it.
