The mill chimney in South Darenth is dated 1881 on its east side and built like an Italian bell tower. In 1918 a 70-foot round extension went on top so the smoke would clear the valley; later in the 20th century that extension was cut back by half.

Despite its name, Horton Kirby Paper Mill stands in South Darenth. The official listing says it made paper from 1830 to 2003, on the site of an earlier flour mill. The chimney was listed in August 2003, months after the mill shut. The Central Warehouse, two storeys of stock brick from about 1870-80 with 17 round-headed windows on the first floor, is listed too. Much of the site has since been redeveloped for housing.

The census area that takes in the mill site and Southdowns (Sevenoaks 005D) had 905 households in 2021. Of those, 37.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 31.7% in a terrace; 13.7% rented privately and 4.9% were in shared ownership.

Southdowns, once the Farningham boys' home

The Home for Little Boys on Rabbits Road was known as the Farningham home, though the site is in this parish. It moved out from Tottenham and opened here in 1867, and about 300 boys lived in ten cottages, each run by houseparents. It closed in 1961, became North Downs Approved School the next year, with many of the old buildings replaced, and is now Southdowns Retirement Village.
