Balaclava Road and Alma Grove, which meet Southwark Park Road, were named after Crimean War victories that Southwark's appraisal says were still fresh in the public's mind when they were built. They belong to the Thorburn Square conservation area, which the appraisal calls the only surviving section of the mid-Victorian housing that once typified North Bermondsey; bomb damage and later redevelopment took the rest.
Two-storey terraces round Thorburn Square
Most of the roads had been built by 1879 and the rest by 1896. The land south of Southwark Park Road belonged to the West family, who from the 1860s leased much of it to a master builder, Mr Drake, and he built many of the streets. St Anne's Church came first, in 1869 to 1870, then the small streets, and the villas round Thorburn Square last. Those villas did not survive: in 1968 Southwark Borough Council replaced the square with a three-storey housing development, now a pedestrian precinct that encloses the church on all sides. The terraced streets around it are typically two storeys, with small front gardens.
In a terraced house the kitchen is usually at the back on the ground floor. Racks, trays and side runners come out for a separate soak and clean, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.
The Rennie Estate off Galleywall Road
On the north-east side of Galleywall Road, the council's post-war Rennie Estate runs from two tower blocks down to longer, lower blocks, between 14 and 5 storeys. A 12-storey and a 5-storey block were added on the old garage site south of Trevithick House: 49 homes, all of them council homes, which residents moved into in 2025.

Weekday parking zones in South Bermondsey
The zones on Southwark's CPZ list with local names are all weekday-only: SB (South Bermondsey), Monday to Friday 8am to 6.30pm, and TS (Thorburn Square) and SEB (South East Bermondsey), Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm. Outside those hours the council says permits are not needed, so a Saturday or Sunday slot, at the weekday price, avoids them. On a weekday we need a bay; check the sign on your street and tell us the road.

I live high up in one of the Rennie towers. Does that change anything?
Not really. Mention the floor when you call.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours on site, against about 90 minutes for a single.
Can the hob be done on the same visit?
Yes: a gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23, added to the oven price.
