The Oxo Tower stands on the line where Lambeth's stretch of the South Bank meets Southwark's, and floors three to seven of Oxo Tower Wharf are 78 flats owned by Redwood Housing Co-operative. West of the tower, mostly in Lambeth, are the other homes Coin Street Community Builders put up after 1984 on a largely derelict 13-acre site.
Coin Street's four housing co-ops
Mulberry came first, in 1988, let to local people nominated by Lambeth and Southwark. Palm, on Broadwall, followed in 1994 with 27 homes, 10 of them family houses with gardens. Redwood's flats at Oxo Tower Wharf were finished in 1995: 28 one-bedroom, 45 two-bedroom and 5 three-bedroom, with their own entrance, lifts and basement parking. Iroko, designed by Haworth Tompkins, was completed in 2001 around a shared garden, and 32 of its 59 homes are five-bedroom houses, four storeys high on Coin Street and Cornwall Road.
A five-bedroom house is rare this close to the river, and a kitchen cooking for that many people is the sort that may have a double oven or a 90cm range. Coin Street says very few vacancies come up, and half of those at Palm, Redwood and Iroko must be offered to households put forward by the two councils.
Flats on both sides of the borough line
Away from the co-op houses, the South Bank is flats. In Lambeth's Waterloo & South Bank ward, 79.1% of households at the 2021 Census lived in a purpose-built block. Of the 3,863 households, 41.3% rented privately, 36.2% rented from a council or housing association and 21.0% owned. On the Southwark side of Upper Ground, Southbank Tower was completed in 1972 as King's Reach Tower and rebuilt by 2015 with 41 storeys and 191 flats.
In a tower flat the oven is usually built into the kitchen units. The racks, trays and side runners come out for a separate soak and clean, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Single, double or range: telling them apart
A single oven has one cavity, often with the grill inside it. A double has two cavities behind separate doors, usually a small top oven with the grill above a larger fan oven. A 90cm range cooker stands on its own, with a wide hob on top and two ovens side by side or one large oven beside a narrow one. Expect about 90 minutes on site for a single, about 2 hours for a double and 2 to 3 hours for a range.

Parking near Oxo Tower Wharf
Oxo Tower Wharf and the streets east of it towards Bankside fall in Southwark's Bankside zone, C1, which the council's parking zone list gives as controlled every day from 8am to 11pm. Weekends are no way round it there. West of the tower the kerb is mostly Lambeth's, with its own zone hours, so read the sign on the street before you suggest a bay. The van needs somewhere legal to park.
