Somers Town is named after Charles Cocks, made Baron Somers of Evesham in 1784. The Polygon, a fifteen-sided figure of 32 houses, was agreed in 1793 between Jacob Leroux, who held the land on lease from Lord Somers, and Job Hoare, a carpenter.
Stairs and courtyards on the Ossulston estate
Between 1927 and 1931 the London County Council built the Ossulston estate on Chalton Street and Ossulston Street, 310 flats around three courtyards reached through archways. Its architect, G. Topham Forrest, drew on Viennese public housing. The first plan, in 1925, was for nine-storey blocks with lifts; it was cut to seven storeys at most, with fewer lifts. Chamberlain House (1927-29) and Levita House (1930-31) have been listed Grade II since 1996, and Levita House was refurbished in 2004-07, when some flats were made larger.
Fewer lifts than first planned can mean stairs for some flats. The method allows for it: dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. The door is split where its design allows.
Social renting in central Somers Town
