Chalton Street has held a market since about 1795, when it was called the Brill, and by Henry Mayhew's count in the 1850s it ran to 300 pitches, second in London only to Hampstead Road and Tottenham Court Road. The railways drew the boundary and then kept it
Euston arrived in 1838, King's Cross in 1852, St Pancras in 1868, and the Midland Railway put its Somers Town goods depot up in 1887 on the site the British Library occupies now. Three mainline termini on the edges of a few hundred metres of housing is not a normal London arrangement, and it explains the neighbourhood as it stands: the Georgian stock went, Camden's post-war flats went up in its place, and the ground between Ossulston Street and Polygon Road has been rebuilt more than once since.

Council and housing-association flats here mostly run a freestanding cooker or one integrated oven under the worktop, with a hob above it and a hood ignored for longer than the oven has. The newer flats off Brill Place are where a double turns up. Rental churn is steady, so a full oven clean in a Somers Town flat is often an end-of-tenancy job.

Usually. We pay for the bay. If the nearest space is a street over, the carry is our problem and the price stays the same.
My landlord wants the hob and hood done too.
Hob is £23–28, hood is £28, both on the same visit. Most Somers Town kitchens have all three within arm's reach, so it adds little time.
Will the oven work when you have finished?
We turn it on and heat-test it before we sign off. If something was already failing, you will hear it from us rather than from the clerk.
