Soho Housing was started by people who lived here: it bought its first properties in 1973 and now owns and manages almost 800 properties in Soho and central London. Its aim from the start was to stop Soho's existing homes being lost to redevelopment.
Two kinds of Soho flat, a few streets apart
Soho's population fell after about 1850 and has revived steadily since the 1970s, according to Westminster's conservation area audit for Soho and Chinatown. The audit calls the tall blocks of flats the council built in the 1960s the most conspicuous modern homes. Among Soho's tall buildings it lists Kemp House, a block on a podium between the south end of Berwick Street and Ingestre Place, and Ingestre Court, a freestanding block in Ingestre Place. Residents, it adds, are more likely to live in refurbished older properties.
The 2021 Census shows how far apart neighbouring streets are. In the output area round Old Compton Street, Romilly Street and Greek Street, 85.9% of households rented privately, and 38 of the 140 lived in a commercial building, which in census terms means over a shop, in an office block or in a hotel. In the two output areas that hold Kemp House and Ingestre Court, just over half of the 372 households rented from the council or a housing association.

Neither changes the clean. Shelves, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the oven cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are worked on by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.

The price follows the appliance. A single, a double, a 90cm range and an AGA each have their own line, and the figure quoted on the phone is the one on the invoice. For the usual compact kitchen there is more on single oven cleaning.
Parking for the van in Soho's zone G
Berwick Street market runs from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. The whole of Soho is in parking zone G, and in the council's hours table from March 2026 its paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with resident bays controlled around the clock. The council does not issue visitor permits for on-street parking; visitors use pay-to-park bays, or single yellow lines outside controlled hours.
Sunday is the simplest day here: no market, no control on the paid bays, and the same price as a weekday. The square at the top of Greek Street and Frith Street has a page of its own, Soho Square.

The oven is put back together and heated, and you look inside. Any spot we missed is cleaned before we go.
