Sloane Square was laid out where Sloane Street crossed the king's private road, and the Victoria County History says it was largely occupied by 1780. The square, Sloane Terrace, Sloane Gardens and Holbein Place are all in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; just east, Cliveden Place, Eaton Gate and Bourne Street are in Westminster.
Sloane Gardens and the streets rebuilt in the 1880s
The streets south of the square were redrawn in the 1880s. In 1886 Lord Cadogan and the Chelsea vestry agreed to reorganise the roads south of the square: Lower Sloane Street was widened, and the straight Holbein Place replaced what was known as The Ditch. By 1894 the south side of the square had shops and flats, and the builder Willett had put up substantial houses on both sides of Sloane Gardens and the west side of Lower Sloane Street.
Most homes round the square are flats, as the Census figures below show. In a tall late-Victorian building the kitchen can be at the back of a long plan, a lift ride or a few flights from the street. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat. Dust sheets go down before anything is lifted out.
Lettings round Sloane Terrace
Households in the two Census areas either side of the square mostly rent. In the one that holds Sloane Terrace and the square's north side (Kensington and Chelsea 012C), 60.3% of 660 households rented privately in 2021 and 67.4% lived in a purpose-built block. South of the square (018D), round Sloane Gardens and Holbein Place, the private share was 54.1% and 78.1% lived in purpose-built flats. Only 2.4% rented from a social landlord on the Sloane Terrace side.

Parking round the square
On the Kensington and Chelsea side, the council's residents' parking map of June 2026 shows the square, Sloane Terrace and Sloane Gardens with residents' bays controlled until 10pm on weekdays, until 6.30pm on Saturdays and from 1pm to 5pm on Sundays. In those hours the van pays at a pay-by-phone bay. Cross into Westminster at Cliveden Place or Bourne Street and its own zone rules apply, which the Belgravia page sets out.
