Pont Street Dutch is a kitchen problem before it is a style
The 5th Earl Cadogan pushed a red-brick style through the estate in the 1870s and 1880s that got named Pont Street Dutch, all terracotta detail and heavy gables, and Sloane Gardens and Sloane Terrace are lined with the late-Victorian mansion blocks it produced. Those blocks have grand communal entrances, original tiled floors and high-ceilinged lateral flats. They also have kitchens converted out of old service rooms at the back, which means a narrow door and a walk to the kerb with a rack in each hand. Where a block has knocked two flats together, a double oven in a Sloane Gardens mansion flat is common enough at £110.
Holbein Place and the rest of the kerb
Lord Cadogan struck a deal with the Chelsea vestry in 1886 to redraw the roads south of the square, widening Lower Sloane Street and replacing the old Ditch, which had followed the curve of the buried Westbourne, with the straight run of Holbein Place. Straight helps. Sloane Square sits in the Royal Borough, where nearly every street is a controlled parking zone and resident permits are priced on the vehicle's CO2. We pay for the bay. Chelsea is outside the Congestion Charge zone and ULEZ applies.
