The borough of Enfield has two Silver Streets. This one runs north from The Town, past the Civic Centre; the other, with the Overground station of the same name, is in Edmonton, about 4.5 km to the south.
Listed houses facing the Civic Centre tower
Enfield Town had spread north along Silver Street by 1656, and the west side still has a run of old houses on big plots, inside the Enfield Town conservation area. Nos. 60 and 90 are late 18th-century brick houses, both listed. White Lodge, No. 68, may be a 17th-century timber-framed house under its 18th-century weatherboarding. Joseph Whitaker, who founded Whitaker's Almanack, lived there from 1862 until he died in 1895. Later it was a doctor's surgery for over a century; the practice moved to Chase Side in December 2021, and in 2022 a planning application sought to make it a home again.
Across the road stands the stainless-steel-clad tower the council added to its Civic Centre in the mid-1970s. The council's 2015 conservation area appraisal says the west side of Silver Street had more office floorspace than housing. The homes it names on the street are the old houses and, at the southern end beside Town Parade of 1906, a five-storey block of shops and flats. A flat in a block like that often has a compact kitchen with a built-in single, and a lift or stairs between it and the street. Semi-detached streets east of Silver Street
Between the wars, the Victoria County History says, few council houses were built around Enfield Town, and its main growth was between Baker Street and the New River. Newman Eyre of Romford had permission for 594 houses east of Churchbury Lane in 1934, and E. N. Stephens of Willesden for 279 on former vicarage glebe land.
The 2021 Census counts what is there now. The small statistical area (Enfield 009D) that covers the north end of Silver Street and runs east to take in parts of Willow Road, Riversfield Road and Apple Grove had about 640 households: 79.2% lived in a semi-detached house and 80.9% owned their home. A semi from the 1930s has often had its kitchen extended or knocked through, and the cooker may be a built-in double at eye level or a freestanding cooker. Parking behind Silver Street
A 1998 council order added Churchbury Close, and parts of Churchbury Lane and Willow Road, to the Enfield Town controlled parking zone.
