The parish runs almost five square miles from the River Thames in the north down to the A2 Watling Street in the south, and holds roughly 1,060 residential properties, about 690 of them in Shorne Village Ward and around 370 in Shorne West, which is not many kitchens spread across a great deal of ground. Most of the parish is not lived in
The marshes are not housing. Shorne Marshes run down to the Thames Estuary as part of the North Kent Marshes on the Hoo Peninsula, and they are a Site of Special Scientific Interest rather than anywhere with a cooker in it. The chalk end goes the other way, up into the North Downs at Shorne Woods Country Park. The houses sit in between, around The Street and along Gravesend Road, and that middle band is the whole job.
Henry I gave the church away in 1132
Shorne is an ancient parish that almost certainly existed before 1066. In 1132 Henry I granted the church of Shorne, along with the tithes of corn and lambs and the chapel of Cobham appendant to it, to the Monastery of St Saviour of Bermondsey. The building is Saxon in origin, shown by a double-splayed window over the north arcade, with a 13th-century chancel and a 15th-century tower. Its font carries an Agnus Dei sheep, thought to be a medieval pun on the village name.
Randall Manor turns up twice
Sir Henry de Cobham, Lord of Randall Manor, died in 1315 and lies in armour on a reclining effigy in the Randall Chapel of the parish church. The manor itself was a 14th-century building whose remains are now in Shorne Woods Country Park. If the kitchen has a 90cm range in it, a range cooker clean is £114.
