On 19 October 1683 the ground that became Hoxton Square, in Hackney, was leased for building to Samuel Blewitt and Robert Hackshaw, and No. 32, on the east side, is a house of two storeys and an attic that probably dates from those first years.
Hoxton Square and the streets north of Old Street
The garden in the middle was laid out in 1709 as a parallelogram, in imitation of Soho Square and Golden Square, and enclosed in 1777. West of it, the field called Pitfield was let in 1684 on a 900-year building lease; its owners won a licence in 1688 for a twice-weekly market there, the plan seems to have fallen through, and the ground became the square still called Hoxton Market. Queen Street, the lane along the edge of Pitfield, is now Coronet Street.
Later the houses went over to trade. The Survey of London, published in 1922, describes Nos. 2 to 4 Hoxton Square as three-storey brick premises with a basement and some panelled rooms, adapted as a fancy-leather warehouse. Hackney's account of the South Shoreditch conservation area, first designated in 1991, puts the furniture and printing trades at their height in the mid to late 19th century.
Flats in converted buildings
Homes have come back into those buildings. In the census output area that takes in part of Hoxton Square and Coronet Street there were 94 or 95 households in 2021, depending on the table, so treat the shares as rough: 49.5% lived in a purpose-built block, 28.4% in a converted building other than a house and 10.5% in a commercial building (the census category for flats over shops and offices). 69.1% rented privately and 28.7% owned.

Parking round Hoxton Square
The square, Coronet Street and the south end of Pitfield Street are in Hackney's zone B (North Shoreditch). The council's zone list gives its hours as 8.30am to midnight, Monday to Saturday, the latest finish on the list. Sunday has no zone controls, though yellow lines still apply and some bays carry their own signs. On the other days the van needs a bay it can use during zone hours, so tell us the street and the nearest corner when you book.

My flat is above a bar on the square. Is that a problem?
No. We need a working socket and the oven cool when we arrive; mention the stairs or lift when you call.
Is Sunday the easiest day for parking?
Usually, because zone B has no controls on Sundays. A Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
Can the letting agent be invoiced?
Yes. The invoice can go to the agency, with photos for the checkout file if they want them, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement.
Can you clean the hob at the same time?
