Near the top of the hill, on the old grounds of Shrewsbury House, the builders John Laing and Son put up the Shrewsbury Park Estate, mostly between 1934 and 1936. A photograph dated 20 February 1934 already shows finished houses on the corner of Mereworth Drive and Bushmoor Crescent.
Laing's 1930s semis on Shrewsbury Park
The council's appraisal of the Shrewsbury Park Estate conservation area, designated in January 1992, describes privately owned semi-detached and detached houses on Ashridge Crescent, Bushmoor Crescent, Kinlet Road, Mereworth Drive and part of Plum Lane. Laing sold them from a brochure of standard types, the Rona, Aberdeen, Belford, Newnham, Eskdale and Olympia among them, and the most striking have the curved "Jubilee" suntrap bay. Under an Article 4 direction sought in 1994, owners need planning permission for new windows, any extension, a porch or a hard standing for a car.
None of that reaches inside the house. If a 1930s kitchen has been extended at the back, there may be room for a built-in double or a 90cm range. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
Flats in the Royal Herbert hospital
Lower down Shooters Hill Road, the Royal Herbert Hospital opened in 1865 with wards laid out on lines Florence Nightingale argued for. It closed in 1977, and by 1995 its listed buildings had become the Royal Herbert Pavilions, 228 flats. The council records the old Brook Hospital site nearby as another conversion to housing.
The wider mix is in the 2021 Census. Of the 4,760 households in Shooters Hill ward, which includes Mereworth Drive, 36.6% lived in purpose-built flats, 28.0% in terraced houses and 22.3% in a semi or detached house. Owners were the largest group at 44.9%, with 30.3% renting socially.

The price follows the appliance and is agreed before the visit: £77 for a single, £110 for a double oven and £143 for a 90cm range.
Parking on the hill
Shooters Hill Road follows the line of the Roman Watling Street. Greenwich's list of controlled parking zones has no zone named for Shooter's Hill, and its plans for one were dropped in the summer of 2025 after fierce local opposition. Some houses have drives; if yours does, tell us when you book so the van can pull in close to the door.

No. It covers changes to the outside of the Laing houses, and an oven clean changes nothing outside.

The block, the floor and whether there is a lift, plus somewhere close for the van to stop.
Can the hob be cleaned at the same visit?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic hob £23, added to the oven price.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
