Opposite the Crown on Wickham Road stands a plain pair of semi-detached cottages that Croydon's heritage review dates, probably, to before 1868, and describes as different from the buildings around them. The Crown itself is an Arts and Crafts inspired building.
Shirley's interwar estates either side of Wickham Road
Shirley grew out of two settlements, one on Wickham Road and one on Upper Shirley Road, which is why the hillside round the windmill has its own page, Upper Shirley. A large housing estate went up from the 1920s on the land of Spring Park, between Wickham Road and Shirley Church Road. Cheston Avenue is a single 1930s scheme of semi-detached maisonettes in a modernist style, with curved suntrap bays, Crittall windows and a passage between the houses to the garages. Woodland Way has bungalows set round a copse that is left over from the old Ham Shaw wood; about half of that copse was released for building between 1933 and 1940.
In Shirley North ward, which takes in those streets and Shirley Oaks, 39.1% of the 6,037 households lived in a semi-detached house at the 2021 Census, 24.6% in a terrace and 16.8% in a detached house, with 17.0% in a purpose-built flat. 71.3% owned their home and 36.2% owned it outright. Interwar semis are often extended at the back, and a bigger kitchen has more room for a double oven or a range.
Shirley Oaks, one of the last parts to be built
Shirley Oaks was one of the last parts of Shirley built for housing. The appraisal describes mid-rise blocks of flats and compact houses arranged in small closes and plainly detailed. A compact fitted kitchen of that kind usually has a built-in single at eye level or a double tucked under the worktop.

Parking by the Wickham Road parades
