Spelthorne's 2024 appraisal of the Shepperton conservation area, first designated in February 1970, says Church Square was once the village green and is the oldest part of the conservation area.

The medieval church stood further east until floods swept it away in the 16th century. St Nicholas was rebuilt a little to the west in the late 16th or early 17th century, and its brown brick tower was added in 1710; the church is listed Grade II*. North of it, the Rectory (also Grade II*) takes in part of a late 15th or early 16th-century hall house, and Winches Cottage on Church Road has a late 16th-century timber-framed core. By the early 19th century the village was being described as mean and neglected. Ferry Lane was cut in 1863 to reach the Weybridge ferry, and every 18th-century building on Church Square was put up as a house.
Cottages of that age tend to have small kitchens, often with a slim built-in single or a compact freestanding cooker. A small kitchen is no obstacle: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and indoors the work stays at the oven itself: the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass, done by hand over dust sheets.
The Manygate Lane estate, 1964 to 1965
Off Manygate Lane, between Shepperton and Lower Halliford, several late-Victorian villas were bought by the Lyon Group in 1963 and pulled down. In their place went an estate in three phases, built in 1964 and 1965 to designs by the Swiss architect Edward Schoolheifer. The first two phases are flat-roofed Modernist terraces with full-height glazing on the ground floor, all facing shared landscaped courtyards, and there are two three-storey blocks of 11 homes each over built-in carports. The estate is now a conservation area of its own.

Most of Shepperton, from Church Square to the High Street and Manygate Lane, is in Shepperton Town ward. At the 2021 Census it had 3,143 households, and 36.4% of them lived in a detached house against 19.0% in a purpose-built flat. 47.9% owned their home outright, the highest share among the 13 Spelthorne wards used for the census.
Built-in doubles and wider cookers are more likely in the bigger detached houses. A double oven takes about two hours on site and a 90cm range two to three.

Parking in Shepperton village
Spelthorne runs two car parks in the village, by the Village Hall (TW17 9AU) and at Manor Park (TW17 9JT). A stay of up to two hours costs £2 and anything longer £4, which covers a single at about 90 minutes. The appraisal describes Church Square itself as a hard-landscaped space used for car parking.
Street rules are changing on Grove Road. In its June 2026 statement of reasons, Surrey County Council proposes double yellow lines along the north side from Manygate Lane to Bruce Avenue, keeping parked cars to the south side, partly because of school-time traffic. Check the signs on the day; the team needs somewhere to park.
