The railway stops dead at Shepperton. The branch opened to passengers on 1 November 1864, sponsored by William Schaw Lindsay, who owned the manor, and it was meant to carry on to Chertsey; it never did, so 6 miles and 51 chains of track run out here at the buffers and go no further. That accident of Victorian finance is a large part of why the village stayed a village.

St Nicholas is generally dated to 1614, built out of the ruins of a predecessor the Thames had washed away, with the tower added in 1710. Shepperton Lock went in during the 1810s.

Shepperton held 1,810 people in 1901. By 1951 it was 6,060, and the 2011 census put it at 9,753 across 4,301 households, which means the great bulk of what stands here now is twentieth-century building wrapped around a river core that never got much bigger, and it means the kitchens follow the decade the road was laid rather than any village pattern.
