Shenley Hospital was opened on 31 May 1934 by King George V and Queen Mary, on part of the old Porters Park estate. John Laing built it, and by 1953 it held 2,300 patients.
Homes on the old Shenley Hospital land
Patient numbers fell to about 900 by 1986, and the hospital had closed by the late 1990s. The Shenley Park Trust's history puts the housing built on the site at nearly 900 units. For scale, the three Census areas that cover Shenley parish had 1,654 households in 2021. Mulberry Gardens, Rowan Close and Juniper Gardens, off the south side of Porters Park Drive, went up on hospital grounds that had been added to the conservation area in 1988, and in 2012 the council took those streets out of it again. Hertsmere's appraisal from that year calls the new housing suburban in style and fairly low in density. The trust itself, set up in 1992, runs 45 acres of the grounds, walled garden included, on a 150-year lease.

Older Shenley: New Road and the King Edward Road estate
The old village grew south along London Road from a medieval triangular core of Rectory Lane, Pound Lane and London Road. New Road was laid out between Harris Lane and London Road in the last quarter of the 19th century, and the brick cottages built along it were modest ones. Behind King Edward Road there is a whole estate of 1950s council housing, now former council, with steep roofs, big gables and metal windows in the Garden City manner; Cage Pond Road, Hillcrest Road and Mead Road lead into it.
