In 1840 The Street, the road running east to west just north of Sheering's church, had 66 houses; by 1980 it had over 100. Through the 19th century old houses there were divided or replaced and new ones were built in the gaps between them.
Sheering's two centres, either side of the M11
The parish has two centres. The village is the older one: The Street, and Church Lane, which runs south-east past St Mary the Virgin (listed Grade I) towards Matching. Fourteen council houses were built in Primley Lane, north of The Street, before the Second World War, and 115 more went up on new roads in the same area between 1950 and 1965. Lamberts, on The Street, dates from the late 16th or early 17th century; the novelist Elinor Glyn added two low pavilions to it around 1905, and they were made into flats in about 1970.
Lower Sheering lies about 2 km north-west, by Sawbridgeworth station on the Hertfordshire border. The railway brought industry there in the 19th century, homes followed in Mill Lane and Lower Road by 1921, and since the war there has been much building between Mill Lane and the line. When the M11 was built through the west of the parish, finished in 1980, it cut Back Lane, the old link between Lower Road and The Street.
The 2021 Census counted 3,131 residents in Sheering parish. Across the 1,430 households in its census output areas, 27.9% lived in a purpose-built block of flats (19.2% across Epping Forest district) and 26.6% rented privately (14.9% across the district). Both cluster at Lower Sheering. In one output area there, 211 of 223 households had a flat, and about three in four of the parish's private renters live on that side.

Flats by the station and the end of a tenancy
A flat in a recent block usually has a built-in single oven under the hob, or an eye-level double in a tall unit. An older house in the village is likelier to have an older freestanding cooker or a range. Whichever it is, the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.
With a quarter of households renting privately, tenancies will be ending in Sheering through the year, and the oven is normally on the checkout inventory. Letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name and photos for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement. Our guide to end of tenancy oven cleaning and deposits has more on getting the deposit back.

Sheering oven cleaning questions
Do you cover Lower Sheering as well as the village?
Yes. Lower Sheering is part of Sheering parish, in Epping Forest district, Essex, even though it backs onto Sawbridgeworth, which is over the border in Hertfordshire and has its own page.
My tenant has moved out. Can you collect the keys?
By arrangement, yes. Tell us where the keys are and when the flat is empty, and the invoice goes to the agency.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, including heating the oven at the end so you can look inside before we pack up.
What do you need from me on the day?
A working socket, the oven cool when we arrive, and somewhere for the van close to the door.

Reviews from our rounds
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
