The market is older than the flats. J. J. Sainsbury bought 68 Watney Street in 1881, and by 1902 the market had over 100 shops and 100 stalls. Bombs fell on it from 7 September 1940, planning for a rebuild started in 1955, and north Watney Street was levelled when work began in 1967.
Where Shadwell ward meets Whitechapel ward, Cannon Street Road was described in 1815 as "a double line of good houses". Only a few of them survive. In the Georgian row between St George in the East's entrance and Cable Street, the old shops have become flats, apart from a small restaurant and a girls' school. A flat over a former shop usually means a narrow stair and a compact kitchen. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand upstairs, on dust sheets.
Listed 1980s homes at Shadwell Basin
South towards Wapping, in St Katharine's and Wapping ward rather than Shadwell ward, the London Docklands Development Corporation had housing built round Shadwell Basin in 1986–88 to designs by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard and Wright: five-storey blocks on Newlands Quay and Maynards Quay and three-storey buildings on Peartree Lane. Historic England listed the scheme at Grade II on 18 April 2018. To fit the homes in, the architects put kitchens and bathrooms in the middle of the plan and the larger living rooms on the water side.

Parking zones C1 and C4 around Shadwell
Shadwell spans two of the council's parking sub-zones. Cannon Street Road, Christian Street and Cable Street are listed in C1; Bigland Street, Dellow Street, Glamis Road and Garnet Street, down towards the Basin, are in C4. Both are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, according to the council's zone page, so neither has controls at the weekend.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
