The yellow-brick terraces of Perch Street, April Street and Seal Street, off Shacklewell Green, carry terracotta plaques dated 1881 to 1886. John Grover, a builder from New North Road in Islington, put them up on land between the high road and the green.
Grover's terraces off Shacklewell Green
Shacklewell was a hamlet long before it was a postcode; it first turns up in the records in 1490, when a London saddler had a tenant there. The green survives as a strip of grass with plane trees, and on 19 February 2018 Hackney drew the Shacklewell Green conservation area around it. It takes in the green, the three Grover streets and the Grade II* listed Church of St Barnabas and Merchant Taylors Mission Hall on Shacklewell Row, the cul-de-sac that runs north from the old village.
The Victoria County History calls the Grover houses modest, and when it described them in 1995 the little grid was already partly pedestrianised. Houses of that size usually have a narrow kitchen at the back with a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the inside of the door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen, on dust sheets laid first.
Council flats built between 1936 and 1949
Hackney's borough council rebuilt parts of Shacklewell from the 1930s. In 1936 it replaced Prospect Row, on the north side of Shacklewell Lane, with the three six-storey blocks of Shacklewell House. By 1939 Hindle House, 197 flats in five-storey ranges, had replaced the crowded Hindle Street and Middle Street west of Shacklewell Row. After the war the Somerford estate took the west end of Shacklewell Road (Wellington Road until 1939) and nine acres up to Farleigh Road. Frederick Gibberd designed its 150 homes as one- to three-storey buildings around linked squares, and the first part opened in 1949.
At the 2021 Census, 60.4% of the 3,799 households in Shacklewell ward lived in a purpose-built block of flats. 42.8% rented from the council or a housing association, 31.3% rented privately and 23.3% owned. Private lets end with a checkout inspection, and the oven is on the inventory: agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, photos for the checkout file and, for an empty flat, a key pick-up by arrangement. The appliance sets the price, from a single up to a 90cm range or an AGA, and the figure is agreed on the phone before anyone comes out. A hob or an extractor done at the same visit is added at its own price.
Parking for the van in zones C and E
Hackney's zone map splits Shacklewell in two. The green, Shacklewell Row and the Grover streets are in E8 and in zone C; Shacklewell Road and Somerford Grove, on the N16 side, are in zone E.

Outside those hours the council's zone page says no permit or voucher is needed, though yellow lines still apply, so a Sunday visit misses permit hours on both sides, at the weekday price. No. The removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, whatever the floor. Mention the floor, and whether there is a lift, when you call, so the visit is timed right.
Is a Saturday visit the same price?
Yes, weekends cost the same as weekdays. On the zone E streets around Somerford Grove, permit hours end at 1.30pm on a Saturday.
How long will the oven be out of use?
A single takes about 90 minutes on site, a double about two hours and a 90cm range two to three hours. The oven needs to be cool when we arrive, and it is heated again before we leave so you can check it.
Can the hob be cleaned at the same visit?
