Sewardstone is the only place outside Greater London that carries a London postcode. It is a hamlet in the Epping Forest district of Essex, in the parish of Waltham Abbey, about twelve miles from Trafalgar Square as the crow flies, and it kept the E4 because the Chingford postman was already walking out to it by 1810, long before the modern district boundaries existed. Post Office habit beat local government.
This is not a suburb, and we will not pretend it is
The settlement is linear, strung along the A112 Sewardstone Road, with scattered development and large stretches of open land between the houses. Sewardstone Marsh and the King George V Reservoir form the western edge against Enfield. Epping Forest closes it off to the south. The 1931 census counted 23 residents across a parish recorded in 1888 at 3,022 acres, which tells you the shape of the place better than any description of a high street would, because there is no high street to describe.
The housing that does exist
Gilwell Park, headquarters of the world Scouting movement, is here. So is Gilwell Hill, where 119 homes were built in 2013 on land that had been greyhound racing kennels, and that is the one piece of concentrated modern housing in the hamlet. Everything else is roadside cottages, farm properties and one-off houses on plots. Booking an oven clean out here works the same as anywhere else on our map.
Rural addresses suit the method
Everything dirty happens outside. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, and the van can usually pull onto a drive or verge here rather than hunt for a bay. Indoors it is hand work only, non-caustic, on the cavity, fan cover and door glass. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.

No. The prices above are fixed and given on the phone. Sewardstone sits outside the North Circular, but the rate card does not change for it.
Do you need power or water from the house?
Water, no. The tank and the water are both in the van. We do use a socket indoors for the heat test.
How long will you be there?
About 90 minutes for a single oven and roughly two hours for a double.
