The terraced streets around Selhurst Park
Selhurst station opened in 1865, decades before the football, and the streets round the ground are mostly houses. In the small census area that takes in the stadium, Whitehorse Lane, Clifton Road and Bungalow Road (Croydon 010D), 51.0% of the 641 households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census and 23.6% in a semi, with only 10.3% in a purpose-built flat. 54.8% owned their home and 33.1% rented privately.
A whole house usually means no flights of stairs between the oven and the front door, just the hall and the front step. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Match days and the Holmesdale Road closure
On the day of a match or an event at the stadium, Croydon closes part of Holmesdale Road to vehicles for up to two hours before and at the end, to clear crowds. The closure used to run between Clifton Road and Upper Grove; from 6 October 2025 it was extended south-west to the junction with Dagmar Road and Farnley Road.
If you live on or off Holmesdale Road, check the fixture list before you book and pick a time well clear of those windows. A single oven takes about 90 minutes and a double about 2 hours, so a morning start is over well before a mid-afternoon kick-off.
Selhurst ward, south of the station
Croydon's Selhurst ward, which runs south from the station along Selhurst Road, is more flats than houses. It had 5,249 households in 2021: 35.2% in a purpose-built block and 16.1% in a converted house, and 34.3% rented privately while 29.5% rented from the council or a housing association. The composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor lived at 30 Dagnall Park, one of its streets.
Part of this end is inside Croydon's East Outer parking zone: its zone map shades Northcote Road, Beaconsfield Road, Guildford Road and The Crescent. Croydon's July 2014 notice proposed bringing those roads into the zone with shared permit and pay bays and 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday waiting restrictions, and the signs at the zone entrance give the current hours.
