Sawbridgeworth ovens cleaned by London Oven Cleaners from £77. Before we pack up, the oven is put back together and heated, you look inside, and anything missed is done again.
Sawbridgeworth's conservation area was first designated on 10 June 1968, and the parish has more than 150 listed buildings. The old town is a parallelogram: Bell Street (once Cock Street) and Station Road (once Barkers Lane) run off London Road at right angles, and Knight Street closes the fourth side.
Sawbridgeworth's older houses, street by street
Knight Street and Bell Street are at least as old as the 16th century, and a county history of 1912 describes several 17th-century cottages on both sides of Bell Street. At 40 Knight Street, a Grade II* timber-framed house of the 16th century, parts were refronted in brick in the early 18th and early 19th centuries, so a Georgian or Regency face may hide a much older frame. On London Road, nos. 62 to 66 are one long white weatherboarded building, built as a single house in the 17th century or earlier and since divided; it is listed Grade II.
The same 1912 history says the Newtown lay along Barkers Lane, the old name for Station Road. Malting was the chief industry then, and on Station Road River Court is now a Grade II listed maltings converted to flats.
In an old house altered over the centuries the kitchen is often in a later extension, and the oven in it can be anything from a built-in single to a range. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.

Sawbridgeworth's homes at the 2021 Census
Sawbridgeworth parish is a town of houses. Across the 28 census output areas that best fit the parish, about 3,660 households in all, 33.5% had a detached house, 29.3% a semi and 20.9% a terrace; only 12.3% lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Ownership is high: 76.3% of households owned their home, and 41.1% owned it outright, with no mortgage left. Private renting was 14.1%.
The converted maltings across the Stort, on the Essex bank by the station, are in Lower Sheering, part of Sheering parish in Epping Forest district; the Sheering page covers them.

New homes planned on the edges of the town
The East Herts District Plan, adopted in 2018, provides for at least 500 new homes in Sawbridgeworth: around 125 on land north of West Road, around 175 south of it, and around 200 to the north of the town. New houses are usually fitted with built-in ovens, and some of those have a self-cleaning setting.
- Pyrolytic cycle
- The empty oven heats itself far past cooking temperature and burns grease to a pale ash, which you wipe out once it cools. Shelves and runners normally come out first, so they still need a separate clean.
- Hand clean
- Every removable part is soaked and cleaned separately and the cavity is degreased by hand, including the glass between the door panes where the door design allows. Our pyrolytic self-cleaning guide compares the two.
Parking the van in Sawbridgeworth
The Bell Street car park, 96 spaces, is the only car park East Herts Council manages in the town. The team needs somewhere to park close to your door: a drive is best. Read the signs on your street before the day.
