All Saints' Church on Addington Road has a nave of the late 13th century and 14th-century wall paintings of King Edmund and an archbishop, and it has been listed Grade I since 1954.
The village round the pond
The pond sits at the junction of Limpsfield Road and Onslow Road, on a site of about three and a half acres. The old village stood round it and the church until 1799, when the squire took the green into his park. When the Sanderstead Archaeological Group dug near the pond in 1958 to 1960 they found traces of a 17th-century lodge-house. Up the road, the White House at 18 Limpsfield Road is a timber-framed house of the later 17th century, added to in the 18th and altered again in the 1930s; it is listed Grade II.
1930s housing round Sundown Avenue
Sanderstead's growth between the wars coincided with the electrification of the Southern Railway. An aerial photograph taken on 22 February 1937 shows new housing going up on Sanderstead Plantation round Sundown Avenue. In the Census area the House of Commons Library calls Sanderstead (MSOA Croydon 035), 55.0% of the 3,007 households lived in a detached house in 2021, and 48.4% owned their home outright, with no mortgage.
A detached house is more likely than a flat to have room for a double oven, a wide range or a heat-storage cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the inside of the cooker is degreased by hand indoors.

Parking in Sanderstead
The parking zone that carries the Sanderstead name is by Sanderstead station, at the foot of the valley and nearly 2 km from the village. On Croydon's map of the Sanderstead Permit Zone (the file dates from 2010) the shading covers Broomhall Road, Glossop Road, Parrs Close, Station Approach and part of Sanderstead Road. Limpsfield Road and Sundown Avenue are not on that map. If you have a drive, the van can go on it; if not, check the signs on your road and tell us where the nearest space is.
