Rush Green is split between two councils. Postcodes on Rush Green Road and parts of Dagenham Road are in Havering's Rush Green and Crowlands ward; others close by, on Dagenham Road, Philip Avenue and Lilac Gardens, are in Barking and Dagenham's Eastbrook and Rush Green ward. All of them are RM7.
From the Birkbeck estate to the hospital site
On the Havering side, the small Birkbeck estate of Birkbeck, Grosvenor, Wolseley and West Roads was being built by 1885, according to the Victoria County History. Across the boundary, the Romford Isolation Hospital opened on Dagenham Road in April 1901 with 24 beds and later became Rush Green Hospital. The health authority decided to close it in 1994. Part of the site now holds a medical centre and the Chaseview nursing home; the rest is Bellway housing on streets named after flowers, Camomile Road and Campion Close among them.
The Bellway houses went up after the hospital closed, so they are more than a century newer than the Birkbeck estate.
Rush Green households in the 2021 Census
On the Havering side, the area the House of Commons Library calls Rush Green had 5,012 households: 39.6% in a purpose-built flat, 27.2% in a semi and 26.3% in a terrace. 26.2% rented privately and 18.9% from a council or housing association. Eastbrook and Rush Green ward, on the other side, had 3,023 households, mostly in houses: 40.4% terraced and 36.7% semi-detached, with 15.8% renting privately and 22.9% renting from a social landlord.
Licensed lets on both sides of the boundary
Both councils run selective licensing schemes for private lets. Havering's scheme has covered Rush Green and Crowlands ward since 18 March 2026, and Barking and Dagenham's scheme, which began on 6 April 2025, covers the whole borough.
