Almost every house in Ruislip Manor came from one man's plan: George Ball bought 186 acres south of the railway and built the Manor Homes estate between 1933 and 1939, capped at fourteen dwellings to the acre, which is why the street pattern repeats and why the kitchens do too. Thirties semis have thirties kitchen footprints. Most have been ripped out since, but the room is the same size it was when Lady Bankes Primary opened in 1936, and that limits what fits.

Two patterns dominate. Rear extensions and side-return jobs have given a lot of these semis room for a 90cm range, so Rangemasters and Stoves turn up here more than they do in the flats nearer South Ruislip. The untouched kitchens still run a 60cm freestanding cooker wedged between units, and getting the door off those is the whole battle.
The method does not change either way. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank in the van, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass get degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. Heat-tested before we leave.
A thirties semi with a rear extension usually means a range cooker, and a range cooker means a longer slot.
Parking round the Victoria Road parade
Victoria Road is the shopping parade and it is the one part of HA4 where a van is a nuisance. Hillingdon runs the RM parking management scheme over the roads around the station, with a mix of at-any-time restrictions and Monday-to-Saturday 8am to 6.30pm waiting limits depending on the stretch. Deeper into the estate it is easier.

How long will it take?
A single oven is about ninety minutes, a double nearer two hours. A 90cm range with two cavities runs longer again.
Can you do the extractor at the same time?
Yes, £28 for the hood. Tell us when you book so the slot is long enough, because filters over a range hood take a while.
Is anything caustic used inside my kitchen?
No. That stays sealed in the tank in the van, and there is no smell left behind.
Do you clean rented houses for check-out?
Regularly. The Manor Homes semis get let out in shares and the oven is the first thing an inventory clerk photographs.
