John Betjeman opened his 1954 poem Middlesex by sending a red electric train into Ruislip Gardens and a commuter called Elaine down off it, the whole piece a complaint that rural Middlesex had been built over. He was writing about the streets we work in.
The trains took a while to settle
The station opened on 9 July 1934, waited fourteen years for the Central line to reach it on 21 November 1948 under the New Works Programme, and lost its main line services altogether on 21 July 1958, which left it a tube stop on the West Ruislip branch. Zone 5. The suburb around it went up in the interwar boom of the 1920s and 1930s, when outer Middlesex turned into commuter ground and the fields Betjeman missed went under.
The airfield is older than the RAF
Work started in January 1915 on what was then the RFC Military School, Ruislip, and the aerodrome opened on 3 May 1915, which puts it almost three years ahead of the Royal Air Force itself and gives it the longest continuous use of any RAF airfield. It got the name Northolt anyway, despite sitting in South Ruislip, and its main entrance is beside the tube station there. No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron began training at Northolt on 2 August 1940 and was in combat by the end of that month, finishing the Battle of Britain as the highest-scoring Hurricane squadron in Fighter Command.
The housing is 1930s and most of it has grown
Yeading Brook runs through the area. The stock either side of it is 1930s terraced and semi-detached, the sort that takes a rear extension and a dormer loft conversion well, and a great many have had both. An extended kitchen usually means a built-in oven at eye level and a separate hob on the island or the run. A hob in one of those rear extensions is £23–28 depending on type. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank in the van, so a narrow 1930s hallway never has anything carried through it twice.
