Next to the White Hart on Roydon's High Street is 1-7 Allens Row, a terrace of three-storey, industrial-style cottages built around 1840 by Nathaniel and William Allen. Epping Forest District Council's 2006 appraisal calls it a rare example of the type in Essex; it is said to have been a speculative venture while the railway was being built, and the line reached Roydon in 1841.
Timber frames behind the High Street's fronts
Roydon's conservation area, first designated in 1973, runs from the triangular green at the north end of the village down to Harlow Road and Epping Road. It has 27 listed buildings, St Peter's Church (Grade I) among them. Most date from a rebuilding of the High Street in the 16th and 17th centuries, and several hide their timber frames behind later fronts: 120-122 High Street, by the green, is a pair of 17th-century cottages given a brick front around 1800, and the Dower House has an 18th-century Georgian face. South of Church House stand the village stocks and a timber lock-up, which dates to the early 19th century.
The appraisal notes that these old buildings are mostly long and narrow in plan. In a house like that the kitchen may well be small and at the back. Dust sheets go down first. The removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Roydon's estates, from Temple Mead to Church Mead
By the late 20th century Roydon had turned from a farming village into a commuter one. Between the wars large detached houses went up round the green on the grounds of Roydon Lodge, a country house that was pulled down in the late 1960s. The Temple Mead estate followed in the late 1950s, behind the western side of the High Street, and in the 1980s Church Mead was built on part of the land of Temple House Farm, using many of the criteria in the 1973 Essex Design Guide.
Across the 10 census output areas of Roydon parish (about 1,230 households in 2021), 50.7% of households had a detached house and 27.7% a semi, and just 2.3% lived in a purpose-built flat. Another 76 households, 6.2%, lived in a caravan or other mobile or temporary structure. Four in five owned their home (80.7%).
- Built-in double
- Two ovens stacked in a tall housing at eye level, the main oven at the bottom and a smaller top oven with the grill above.
- Built-under double
- A shorter double that fits beneath the worktop, so both cavities are smaller. Both kinds are £110 and take about two hours; there is more on double oven cleaning.

Getting the van to the door in Roydon
According to the 2006 appraisal, the High Street narrows to a pinch-point at the T-junction at its southern end, and Harlow Road narrows again between Hill Cottage and Lydeard. The team needs somewhere to park for the whole visit, so a drive is ideal. Where there is none, check the signs and lines on your stretch of road and tell us the house name when you book.
Questions from Roydon
I live in a caravan or park home. How is the price set?
By the appliance. Tell us when you ring whether the oven has one cavity or two, and the price is fixed on that call.
Can you clean the extractor hood on the same visit?
Yes. An extractor hood is £28 on top of the oven price; see extractor hood cleaning.
Does the oven have to be off before you arrive?
Yes, it needs to be cool. Leave it off for a few hours beforehand, and keep a working socket free near the cooker.
Is Roydon in Harlow?
No. The post town is Harlow, but Roydon is its own parish in Epping Forest district, Essex; Harlow has a separate page.

Said after the sign-off
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
