Royal Albert DLR station opened on 28 March 1994 and serves the western end of the north quay of the Royal Albert Dock, up on the raised Beckton branch between Prince Regent and Beckton Park. The dock came first. It opened on 24 June 1880, the largest purpose-built dock in Britain at the time, 87 acres of water, and it was the first dock anywhere to be lit by electricity, with railway lines run right to the quay edge.
Beckton kitchens are mostly an 1980s build
Most of the housing behind the quay went up in the 1980s and 1990s under the London Docklands Development Corporation, laid out as short streets and shorter cul-de-sacs. The mix is largely purpose-built flats, with two and three-bedroom terraces and semis among them. Stock of that age normally means one oven built under the worktop, the £77 job at about ninety minutes, or a freestanding 60cm cooker in the same gap. Where somebody has refitted with a 90cm range cooker, that is £114.
Royal Albert Way is the awkward part
The route from the houses to the station crosses Royal Albert Way on the level and is a poor crossing, the only footbridge being some way off. Buses 300 and 376 stop at ground level. The station is unstaffed, sits in zone 3 and runs twelve trains an hour each way off-peak. Its numbers climbed once Newham Council moved staff into Building 1000 alongside: about 1.23 million passengers in 2025.
Racks soak outside, glass is done by hand
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out of the oven and into the heated tank in the van. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, which is why no chemical smell is left once we have gone. The oven is heat-tested and signed off first.
