St Mary's Church on St Marychurch Street was rebuilt in 1714 on the site of the medieval church; its tower is inscribed 1747 and the spire was rebuilt in 1861. Southwark calls the area round it a riverside "London village", and has kept them as the St Mary's Rotherhithe conservation area since 9 October 1970. A short walk east, on Tunnel Road, is the engine house built around 1842 for the pumps of Marc Brunel's Thames Tunnel, begun in 1825 and finished in 1843. The council's history pages also name Rotherhithe as home to the captain and many of the crew of the Mayflower, which sailed for America in 1620.
Flats in Rotherhithe's old riverside warehouses
Several of the wharves on the river side of the village are now homes, and Historic England lists them. Hope Sufferance Wharf on St Marychurch Street was a grain warehouse and workshop of the late 18th or early 19th century; it is flats today, and one of its timber posts is a reused ship's mast. Grice's Wharf, at 119 Rotherhithe Street, is a four-storey warehouse of about 1850 to 1860 converted for living in. Thames Tunnel Mills, a mid-Victorian mill with a detached octagonal chimney, has been turned into flats too.
A warehouse flat usually has a fitted kitchen with the oven built into the units, at waist height or under the hob. The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking in the Rotherhithe Village zone, RV
The village has its own parking zone, RV, and Southwark's orders for it came into force on 20 January 2025. They put permit bays on St Marychurch Street, Mayflower Street, Elephant Lane, Swan Road, Tunnel Road, Rupack Street, Kenning Street, Canon Beck Road and parts of Rotherhithe Street, in force from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. A paying visitor may stay one hour in the shared bays, less than a single oven takes, and loading on the double yellow lines is capped at 40 minutes.
On a weekday, then, the van needs a visitor's permit; Southwark sells visitor's permits to anyone living in a parking zone, with or without a car. The zone does not run at weekends, and a Saturday or Sunday visit costs the weekday price. The RV boundary meets the older zone H at Brunel Road, so read the plate on your own street.
