The park in Rise Park was a gift. In 1937 Thomas England, a local trader and councillor, gave 23.5 acres so that a green link could run between Raphael Park and Bedfords Park, and the park opened that same year with a play area and a paddling pool.
Semis round the park
The estate streets open straight onto it. The main entrance is on Beauly Way, with others at Dee Way, Cree Way, Garry Close, Seaforth Close and Lower Bedfords Road, and the houses on nearby Clyde Way and Deveron Way are mostly semi-detached. In the census output area that covers those two roads, 93 of the 108 households (86.1%) lived in a semi in 2021 and the rest in detached houses, and 96.3% of households owned their home; 62.4% owned it outright, against Havering's 34.5%.
The Romford Recorder's look back at 26 July 1953 says 400 private houses would be built at Rise Park after Romford Council failed to secure a compulsory purchase order for the land. Few homes are rented from the council now: 2.5% of households in Marshalls and Rise Park ward in 2021.
Long-owned kitchens
When a family has owned a house outright for years, the kitchen has usually been refitted at least once, and the oven may be a built-under double, an eye-level single or a freestanding cooker. All of them come apart the same way. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
