In 1930 John Laing's site offices stood at the junction of Lower Barn Road and Mitchley Avenue, where the builder was laying out the estate that makes up most of Riddlesdown today.
Laing's Purley Estate
Laing sold the houses from printed catalogues. The residents' association gallery has part of one from about 1930, and the cover of a 1936 edition, which calls the scheme the Purley Estate, pictures the shops on Lower Barn Road. Buttermere Gardens, Dalegarth Gardens and Ingleboro Drive can already be picked out in a photograph of the site taken in 1930. The railway came first: the Southern Railway opened Riddlesdown station, reached from Lower Barn Road, on 5 June 1927, on the Oxted line.
Nearly a century on, the Census still counts mostly semis and detached houses. In the Census area that takes in Mitchley Avenue, Lower Barn Road and Ingleboro Drive (LSOA Croydon 042D), 48.3% of the 642 households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021 and 38.2% in a detached one; only 10.3% were in a purpose-built flat, and 86.3% owned their home.
Ovens in 1930s semis
