The estate is close to 2,000 homes across 49 buildings, laid out either side of Robert Street between Albany Street and Hampstead Road, built in the 1950s by the Metropolitan Borough of St Pancras on land it bought from the Crown Estate in 1951 and designed by architects of the day including Frederick MacManus. The blocks take their names from the Lake District. Windermere, Coniston, Silverdale, Ainsdale, Eskdale, Rydal Water, Cartmel, Langdale. Netley Primary and Christ Church School adjoin it.
Two eras of kitchen on one estate
A 1950s council flat kitchen is a narrow galley: units along one wall, a built-under single oven or a cooker wedged between worktops, and a hob that carries most of the cooking. The newer end of the estate is a different job. After HS2, Camden replaced what it lost with eight new blocks by Mae and Matthew Lloyd, and those flats have integrated ovens and modern fan covers. Same estate, two minutes walk, seventy years of kitchen design apart.
HS2 reshaped the north end
The Euston works cost the estate 182 homes, 136 of them social rent and 24 bought under Right to Buy, and in 2023 Camden agreed with HS2 to secure vacant possession of the Cartmel, Coniston and Langdale blocks in the north area. HS2 paid around £40 million towards the rebuild, and 175 affordable council homes went up. Three of the original L- and T-shaped Gibberd blocks are gone.
The van, the lift, the tank
This corner of NW1 falls under Camden's CA-G controls, the Regent's Park and Euston order that names Albany Street and Robert Street among the streets with extended controlled hours. The heated dip-tank stays in the van, so racks, shelves, trays and side runners are carried out, soaked and brought back. Lifts are small. The cavity, fan cover and door glass get degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products while the parts are out.

Is the price different on an estate?
No. A single oven is £77 here and £77 in Belgravia. There is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
Our cooker is freestanding and old. Is it worth cleaning?
Usually yes. Age is not the problem, a cracked door seal or a dead element is, and we will tell you if that is what we find.
Will it smell in a small flat?
It should not. Nothing sprayed indoors is caustic.
Can you come when the block door is on a fob?
Yes, just be in when we arrive. Technicians are insured and DBS-checked, and the oven is heat-tested before we sign off.
