Cumberland Market, now inside the estate, was the third of the markets serving John Nash's Regent's Park housing and the only one that worked as a market; the hay and straw market moved here from the Haymarket in George IV's reign.
Council blocks named after the Lake District
Most of Nash's housing in the area, round Munster Square, Clarence Gardens and Cumberland Market, was destroyed in the Blitz. In 1951 the Crown Estate sold the land to the Metropolitan Borough of St Pancras, which built most of today's estate in the 1950s: nearly 2,000 homes in 49 buildings either side of Robert Street, between Albany Street and Hampstead Road. Most blocks take Lake District names, such as Windermere, Cartmel and Rydal Water.
Regent's Park ward, which takes in the estate, had 4,966 households at the 2021 Census. Three in four, 75.8%, lived in purpose-built flats, and 51.3% rented from the council or a housing association.

Either way the method does not change. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Blocks the estate lost to HS2
Eskdale, Ainsdale and Silverdale, the blocks beside the railway, were demolished for HS2. Their replacements are on the estate itself. Matthew Lloyd Architects finished 85 homes on five sites in 2018: Roswick and Ravenglass on Albany Street, Bowfell in a mews, and Lindale and Mardale on Hampstead Road, where Lindale is an 11-storey point block. In January 2023 Camden agreed a funding deal with HS2 that let residents of Cartmel, Coniston and Langdale move away voluntarily, and in November 2025 its cabinet agreed plans to redevelop the north of the estate, including those three blocks and Stanhope Parade. The design team speaks of over 500 homes, with a planning application aimed at late 2026. The works themselves are covered on the Euston page.

Parking near the estate's blocks
Robert Street, Varndell Street and Munster Square are in Camden's CA-G zone, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. Across Albany Street, the Crown Estate's streets have their own sub-zone, CA-G(Crown), which Camden lists as controlled around the clock. Camden's trade permit cannot be used inside a housing estate, so the estate's own roads and car parks are not covered by it. CA-G lists no weekend controls, and a Saturday or Sunday visit is charged at the weekday price. The team needs somewhere to park, so tell us the block and the nearest street.
