Reedham station opened as Reedham Halt on 1 March 1911, on the branch to Tattenham Corner beside the Old Lodge Lane bridge, and it was named after the Reedham orphanage nearby.
The orphanage that named Reedham
Andrew Reed, a Congregational minister, started his Asylum for Fatherless Children in Richmond in 1844. In 1853 it bought a hillside estate on what is now Old Lodge Lane, then usually called Coulsdon. The Lord Mayor of London laid the foundation stone on 5 August 1856, and the home opened in 1858 with room for 300 children. After Reed died in 1862 it took the name Reedham, and so did the village that grew up nearby.
The home closed on 9 January 1980. The site was sold for privately built housing, and the sale set up the Reedham Trust, which still works from the old entrance lodge, the only building left standing.
Flats, terraces and the old council offices
The Census area that takes in Old Lodge Lane, Reedham Drive, Watney Close and Musgrove Close (LSOA Croydon 041E) had 816 households in 2021. A third of them (33.2%) lived in a purpose-built flat and 26.7% in a terraced house, and 19.5% rented from a housing association or similar social landlord, against 8.2% across Purley & Woodcote ward; another 21.3% rented privately. The former Purley Council Offices on the Brighton Road, just west of the station, now hold flats. Croydon's Old Lodge Lane Permit Zone is small. On the council's map, dated November 2007, the shading covers only the short stretch of Old Lodge Lane beside the station, between the Brighton Road and the railway; Reedham Drive, Aveling Close, Callow Field and Hartley Down are drawn outside it. The map also notes that permits are not valid in pay-and-display-only bays. Check the signs on the day, because the team needs somewhere legal to park.
