Rectory Road station opened in 1872 on the Great Eastern Railway's Enfield branch, which ran from Hackney Downs to join an existing line at Edmonton, with Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill as the next stations.
The lane to West Hackney's rectory
In the 1820s a lane ran from West Hackney church, at the south end of Stoke Newington High Street, through fields to the church's rectory and on to Shacklewell Lane. The north end of Shacklewell Lane was later renamed Rectory Road.
The houses came in the decade after the station. William Redmond took a lease for 26 houses in Rectory Road in 1876. Edward Withers was to build 45 in Benthal and Evering roads in 1877, 42 in Norcott Road in 1880, 77 in Brooke and Narford roads in 1882 and 50 in Alconbury Road in 1883. Away from the high road, the long, tidy avenues near Stoke Newington Common were considered superior to the roads of Shacklewell around 1910.
Upper and lower flats in Hackney Downs ward
Many of those terraces have since been divided into flats. At the 2021 Census, 33.2% of the 5,370 households in Hackney Downs ward, which takes in the station and the streets to its east, lived in part of a converted or shared house, the second-highest share of any Hackney ward after Brownswood. Another 45.0% lived in purpose-built flats. West of the station, the shops and flats on Stoke Newington Road have their own page, Stoke Newington Central. In the ward, 40.2% rented from the council or a housing association, 29.9% rented privately and 27.9% owned.
A terrace split into an upper and a lower flat has two kitchens and two sets of tenants who may move out months apart. Each oven is priced on its own. In either flat the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Letting agents can have the invoice addressed to the agency, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement.

Three parking zones along one road
Rectory Road is a short road, about 600 metres long, and on Hackney's map it passes through three zones. The hours below are from the council's zone list:
- Zone E, around the station
- 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday at the station and just north of it; further south, 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays.
- Zone R (Rectory Road), to the north and east
- 7am to 11am, Monday to Friday only. Takes in Benthal, Norcott, Narford, Alconbury and Maury roads.
- Zone S (Hackney North), towards Hackney Downs
- 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Also covers the south end of Rectory Road.
Outside those hours no permit or voucher is needed, though yellow lines still apply.

The road and the station are N16. A street or two to the east the postcodes turn to E5, and just past the south end of the road, towards Shacklewell, they are E8. N4 is Finsbury Park, nearly 3 km west. The price is the same in all of them.
Does zone R need a permit all day?
No. It is controlled only from 7am to 11am, Monday to Friday.

How long does it take?
About 90 minutes for a single, about two hours for a double and two to three hours for a 90cm range.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
