Ravensbourne is a station rather than a village. It opened in 1892, put there by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway on their new Catford Loop, it adjoins Beckenham Place Park, and it serves the north edge of Beckenham and of Shortlands, which is why an address near it can read BR3 or BR2 depending on which side of the line you live. It is 10 miles 34 chains from Victoria, zone 4, two platforms, and the roadside booking office was rebuilt after a fire in 1988. Thameslink runs it.

What surrounds the station is late-Victorian and Edwardian suburb, laid out while the railway was new. The Ordnance Survey map of 1898, surveyed in 1894, already shows Beckenham Lane and Martin's Road complete and Recreation Road nearly so, including a run of five semi-detached houses dated 1887 with alternate half-hipped and pitched roofs. The Cator family were among the biggest landholders here, with an estate that once reached from Shortlands to Sydenham Hill. Shortlands Golf Club on Meadow Road dates from 1894.
Big villas, small flats, one price list
Houses of that size and age have usually been extended at the back, and the kitchen that results tends to take a tall double at £110, around two hours, or a 90cm range at £114. Where the villas have been cut into flats the fit is normally a single at £77. An extractor hood at £28 is the common add-on in a period kitchen with a chimney breast behind the cooker.
