Ratcliff was a parish of its own from 1866 until 1921, when it was merged into Limehouse, and it has no ward or station today. The name survives in street names such as Ratcliffe Cross Street, Ratcliffe Orchard and Ratcliffe Lane, which runs beside Limehouse station. The postcodes of those streets and of Butcher Row fall in Tower Hamlets' Shadwell ward.
Ratcliff after the fire of 1794
In July 1794 a barge loaded with saltpetre caught fire here. The blaze destroyed more than 400 houses and left about a thousand people homeless. Two buildings from the rebuilding that followed are listed. At 2 Butcher Row, the sugar refiner Matthew Whiting built a brick house in 1795-6, with plasterwork that includes sheaves of sugar cane; it is Grade II*, and it is now the Master's House of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, which moved onto the site of the bombed St James Ratcliffe church in 1948. On The Highway, the East India Company rebuilt its saltpetre warehouses from 1796. They are Grade II as Free Trade Wharf, and when the site was redeveloped as flats in the 1980s the new red-brick block was stepped back at the sides so that more of the flats would face the river.
Flats on Ratcliffe Cross Street
A recent development is the Kiln Works, 1-9 Ratcliffe Cross Street: two blocks of flats by Notting Hill Genesis, sold on private sale and shared ownership and finished around 2020 or 2021 (property databases differ on the date).
The 2021 Census area that includes the Kiln Works, Ratcliffe Lane and Butcher Row (Tower Hamlets 025F) had 630 households. 83.2% of households there lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 7.3% in part of another converted building such as an old school, church or warehouse; only 4.1% had a terraced house. 45.4% rented privately, 33.8% owned and 19.4% rented from a social landlord.
A recently built flat usually has a built-in oven under the worktop, and some have a pyrolytic setting. The racks and side runners normally come out before that cycle and stay dirty; the pyrolytic self-cleaning comparison goes through it. On our visit the racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand. The door is split where its design allows.

The appliance sets the price. A single, a double, a 90cm range and an AGA each have one fixed figure, agreed on the phone before anyone comes out, and a Sunday costs the same as a Tuesday.

On the council's 2020 zone map, Ratcliff falls in Tower Hamlets parking zone C, labelled the Stepney and Wapping area. The council's zone page gives zone C's controlled hours as 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and notes that estates and other private land have different restrictions. I am moving out of a rented flat here. Can the agency pay?
Yes. In the 2021 Census area that includes the Kiln Works, 45.4% of households rented privately, so moving out of a rented flat is a common reason for a clean. The invoice can be made out to the agency, photos taken for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat collected by arrangement.
Is a weekend visit any easier for parking?
The council lists zone C's controlled hours as Monday to Friday, apart from the Trinity Square area, so the zone controls do not run at weekends here; estates and private land keep their own rules. The price is the same as on a weekday. On any day, tell us if your block has a car park or a loading bay the van may use.
