Ratcliff has no council ward, no station and no sign on the road, and the name now survives on two things: Ratcliffe Lane beside Limehouse station, and Ratcliff Cross Stairs on the foreshore. Post here is addressed E1, E1W or E14, and most people say Shadwell or Limehouse instead. The place is real. The label went quiet.
Ratcliff is the riverside strip between Shadwell and Limehouse
North bank, Limehouse east, Shadwell west. The name is first recorded as Rede clive in 1294, after a red gravel cliff above Wapping Marsh. King Edward Memorial Park takes up much of the frontage. It opened on 24 June 1922 on the old Shadwell Fish Market site and is still the only riverside park between Tower Hill and the Isle of Dogs.
Nothing domestic here predates the 1794 fire
In July 1794 a barge loaded with saltpetre caught alight at Ratcliff and the fire that followed destroyed more than 400 homes and around 20 warehouses, leaving about a thousand people homeless, which is why the kitchens anyone books a clean in today are Victorian at the oldest, with post-war estate blocks and dock-era warehouse conversions making up the rest. The Highway is a red route, so the van sits off it
The Highway is the A1203, part of the TfL road network, so red lines rule out stopping to unload. Its eastern end at Butcher Row carries the Limehouse Link portal, and the Rotherhithe Tunnel surfaces at the same junction. We park on the side streets and carry the parts to the tank.

My flat is a warehouse conversion and the windows barely open. Will it smell afterwards?
It should not. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van. Indoors we do the cavity, fan cover and door glass by hand, non-caustic.

How long will you be in the kitchen?
About ninety minutes for a single and around two hours for a double. It is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
