Rainham Hall, on the Broadway, was built by Captain John Harle, owner of the village wharf. Its brick exterior appears to have been finished by 1729, and the National Trust has looked after it since 1949.
The old village round the Broadway
Havering designated the Rainham Conservation Area in 1968, centred on the village core and its riverside setting, and adopted a new appraisal for it in September 2025. The church of St Helen and St Giles, a dedication found nowhere else in England, was built of flint rubble and septaria, probably about 1178, and keeps its round 12th-century arches. Opposite it, the Victoria County History describes the vicarage as a 17th-century house rebuilt in 1710.
Victorian Rainham grew east of the Broadway, where Melville and Cowper Roads were laid out about 1880 with mostly semi-detached and terraced houses; in 1908 the place was described as an entirely working-class district. A house of that age usually has a small kitchen at the back, with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker.
The plots either side of New Road
In 1920 a developer, Allen Ansell, bought Brights farm (262 acres) and Parsonage farm (102 acres). New Road, finished by 1926 to take traffic round the village, ran through the land, and Ansell laid out roads on both sides and sold plots said to be "cheaper per square yard than linoleum", as the Victoria County History puts it. Many buyers were east Londoners who had kept smallholdings on the edge of West Ham. Individual owners built at random, with no sewer and no made-up roads. In 1944 the Greater London Plan proposed putting the land back to market gardening; a residents' association formed to fight it won, and the estate was left out of the planned Green Belt. A sewer was begun about 1960, and the roads were paved by 1972.
Because individual owners built the houses, two kitchens on the same road can be quite different, so tell us the cooker type when you call. Across Rainham and Wennington ward the 2021 Census counted 5,117 households: 39.1% in semis, 27.8% in terraces, 17.8% in detached houses and 12.7% in purpose-built flats. 72.4% owned their home and 17.5% rented privately.
Beam Park, west of the village
Havering's 2024 character study describes Beam Park as an emerging neighbourhood just west of Rainham village, much of it built on land that belonged to the Ford Dagenham plant: blocks of flats and terraced homes, with 3,000 homes, a local centre and a possible station planned when it is complete. The station was still not built in March 2026, when the council leader said the area would stay in a transport vacuum without it. Parking in Rainham
Havering's schedule of charges lists the Cherry Tree car park on Cherry Tree Lane under Rainham, charged 7am to 6pm and free on Sundays. The on-street bays on Upminster Road South allow only one hour (8am to 6.30pm), which is shorter than a single oven takes; the Wennington Road bays allow three hours from 8.30am to 6.30pm, with no return within two hours, and are free on Sundays. On other roads, check the signs and tell us the street when you book, so we know where the team can park.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
