Roehampton and Putney Heath is one ward with two completely different kitchen problems in it. The Alton estate holds around 13,000 people on its own, which makes it one of the largest council estates in the country, and the flats there mostly kept the layout they were given in the late 1950s: a freestanding or built-under single cooker, a small cavity, and no room to swing a door.

Alton East went up in 1958, Alton West in 1959, and the whole estate has been listed since 1998. The five slab blocks on Highcliffe Drive, Binley, Winchfield, Dunbridge, Charcot and Denmead, are Grade II* and sit on the Richmond Park side, which matters to us in a dull practical way: it is a long carry from a parking space to a lift to a flat door, and the racks have to make that trip twice. Danebury Avenue is the spine of Alton West and the part currently being rebuilt.
Kitchens change as you cross Roehampton Lane
East of Roehampton Lane, towards the Heath and Putney Hill, the houses are bigger and older. Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common come to about 1,140 acres between them and have been run by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators since the 1871 Act, so the streets that back onto them, Wildcroft Road and the roads around the Green Man, have never been built over. That is where the range cookers and the occasional AGA live. The Dover House Estate, the 1920s cottage estate, is narrow galley kitchens and freestanding cookers.

How does the dip-tank method work in a flat?
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, which is why there is no chemical smell left in the kitchen afterwards.
