In 1210 the harness of King John's horses was ferried across the Thames at Fulham for one penny. A bridge came only in 1729, and Joseph Bazalgette's granite Putney Bridge replaced it between 1882 and 1886, with a new rising road, Putney Bridge Approach, cut through the vicarage garden by All Saints Church.
Mansion flats, almshouses and riverside blocks
The homes at this end of the bridge are a mixed group. Ranelagh Gardens runs from Fulham High Street under the railway, and west of the line both its sides are taken up by Ranelagh Gardens Mansions, two three-storey Victorian mansion blocks of red brick with shops at the station corner. Putney Bridge station itself, in gault brick, opened on 1 March 1880. Across the High Street, Nos. 5 and 6 Church Gate are an early 18th-century pair, listed Grade II, the low terrace runs on into Steeple Close, designed by J. de Segrais around 1965, and Sir William Powell's Almshouses stand to the west of Church Gate. On the river, Swanbank Court is three and four storeys of sheltered flats built in 1981 on the old Swan Wharf, and Carrara Wharf, built by Higgs and Hill in 1987 to 1989, is four private blocks of two to six storeys: Chantry, Dorney, Milton and Windsor Courts.
Kitchens in mansion flats and in blocks of the 1960s to 1980s are usually compact, with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Zone U, and Fulham match days
Steeple Close, Fulham High Street, Ranelagh Gardens and the New King's Road end by the station are all in zone U on the council's map, controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, according to the council's zone table. Craven Cottage is up the river, but the zone table gives match-day hours only for zones T, X and Y (the council's event-day parking page covers Craven Cottage), so a home match is not listed as changing the hours in zone U.
