Horses and cattle grazed on Purley Oaks Farm until the late 19th century, and the farm was offered at auction in 1903, four years after Purley Oaks station opened on the Brighton line.

The conditions of that sale meant houses for the professional classes, and the first were lived in within two years. Live-in maids were normal in them. Purley Oaks Road is outside the shading, and Florence Road, Kendall Avenue and Edgar Road start at its southern edge.
