Purley is built where two chalk valleys meet: the Coulsdon Bourne follows the A23 and the Caterham Bourne follows the A22, and the bourne that carved the valleys now runs mostly in culverts.
Flats in and around the town centre
The railway came early. A station called Godstone Road opened at the level crossing in 1840, closed in 1847, reopened in 1856 as Caterham Junction and was renamed Purley in 1888. The developer JP Oldaker put up Pretoria Terrace in 1903, to mark the end of the Boer War, and Bank Buildings on the Brighton Road in 1907, where villas had stood. Tudor Court on Russell Hill Road dates from 1930, with Russell Hill Parade (1935) and Russell Parade (1939) across the road, and Astoria Court now fills the site of the old Astoria cinema, pulled down in the late 1990s.
Newer blocks have followed. On Purley Baptist Church's land at the Banstead Road junction, Mosaic Place won permission for 220 homes after two public inquiries; its first phase, 106 shared-ownership and affordable rented flats, started building in February 2021 and was scheduled to finish in 2023. In the Census area that takes in the town centre and Brancaster Lane (MSOA Croydon 037, which the House of Commons Library calls Purley Central), 34.8% of the 4,230 households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021, and 22.1% rented privately.
The roads east of Purley station
Purley Bury, off Purley Bury Avenue, is an 18th-century house, listed Grade II in 1983, where John Horne Tooke, the politician and writer who wrote The Diversions of Purley, lived. Brancaster Lane runs south from near here to the crossroads with Riddlesdown Avenue and Lower Barn Road, at the edge of the Riddlesdown estate, and it already appears in a photograph of that building site taken in 1930. In the same Census area, 29.4% of households lived in a detached house. A larger detached house may have a wide cooker or a 90cm range, and a 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours; the range oven cleaning page explains the visit.
Parking in the Purley Permit Zone
On Croydon's zone map (the file dates from 2010) the Purley zone takes in the Brighton Road through the centre, the High Street, Whytecliffe Road South, Warren Road and the Godstone Road as far as Downs Court Road. Brancaster Lane and Purley Bury Avenue are not on that map. The map warns that not every road in the zone has bays and that permits do not work in pay-and-display-only bays, so read the signs on your street on the day, and say if you hold visitor permits. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors.

Croydon. Purley joined Coulsdon in the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District, part of Surrey, in 1915, and the district passed into the London Borough of Croydon in 1965. The post town is still Purley, CR8.
I live above a shop on the Brighton Road. Is that a problem?
Say so when you call, and give us the street and any side road or bay you know of. The team needs somewhere to park, so a nearby space saves time.
Can you clean the extractor hood as well?
Yes, at the same visit: the hood is £28 on its own, or part of the £117 price with a single oven and hob.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours, at £110. A single is about 90 minutes.
