The town changed its name in 2020, after a two-year campaign, from Purfleet to Purfleet-on-Thames. The idea was to lift the reputation of the place and pull in investment. Population at the 2021 census was 5,883, in the Thurrock unitary authority, Essex.
Thirty-four homes out of 2,850
An outline application for the regeneration was approved in April 2019: something like 2,850 homes, a new town centre, a primary school, medical facilities and a film and television studio complex billed as the first of its kind in the UK in 50 years. Then the government pulled £75 million of funding in September 2023, and Thurrock Council terminated its development agreement with Purfleet Centre Regeneration Limited after the joint venture could not raise the rest. Sanctuary Housing stepped in on phase 1A and has built the first 34 homes. So the kitchens here are still overwhelmingly the ones that were already standing, not the ones on the plans.
Margarine since 1917, costumes since 2015
Unilever has run a margarine factory in Purfleet since 1917, there is an Esso lubricants plant, and Carpetright has its head office here. The Royal Opera House put its Bob and Manoukian scene-making workshop at High House Production Park in 2010 and added the Costume Centre in 2015. Magazine Number 5 of the 18th-century Royal Gunpowder Magazine survives as the Purfleet Garrison Heritage and Military Centre. Bram Stoker parked Dracula's Carfax house here, fictionally, next to an asylum.
Fenchurch Street in half an hour
Purfleet station is on the c2c line, with services to London Fenchurch Street, Barking, Grays, Tilbury and Southend, and the A13 runs along the northern edge. We drive, so neither matters much to us. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge, and the hood over the hob is £28 on a Purfleet kitchen if you want it doing at the same time.

Worth knowing before you book
How does the method work?
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out to a heated dip tank in the van. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, non-caustic, and there is no chemical smell left in the flat afterwards.
Is this alright for an end-of-tenancy inspection?
Yes. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is the bit clerks photograph.
How long does it take?
Ninety minutes for a single, about two hours for a double.
