London Oven Cleaners clean ovens in Purfleet-on-Thames from £77. When the job is finished the oven is heated and you inspect it, and anything not right is put right before we leave.
The government moved its gunpowder magazines to Purfleet from Greenwich in 1760, and five large ones were built on the riverside. When the garrison closed in the 1970s most of its buildings were pulled down and the Garrison Estate was built on the site.
The garrison, the Dipping and Hollow Cottages
The old centre has been a conservation area since October 1985. Magazine No. 5, the clock tower over the garrison gate and the proof house survive. So does a small group of homes from the Whitbread family's estate; the family owned the chalk quarries. Hollow Cottages were built in 1790 as a single-storey terrace of 12 cottages, made into six in the mid 19th century, and face a shared green. Botany Terrace stands on the pavement edge of London Road, and nos. 1 to 7 High Street are another 19th-century row.
The Dipping, an old chalk quarry later used as an oil depot, was being built on for housing when the council wrote its appraisal in 2007, and the south side of the High Street is enclosed by 21st-century riverside development. Kitchens in a cottage or Victorian row are usually small, with a slim freestanding cooker or one built-in oven; newer homes mostly have the oven built into the units. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Purfleet's two permit zones
Purfleet has two of Thurrock's permit zones, and they run very different hours:
- P1, Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm
- Church Hollow, Church Lane, Linnet Way and parts of Caspian Way including Hollow Cottages and the Dipping Bungalows.
- P2, every day, 8am to midnight
- The terraces on London Road: Botany Cottages and Botany Terrace, Railway Cottages, Riverview, Southland, Station and Sussex Terrace, and nos. 1 to 7 High Street.
P1 has no restrictions after 3pm or at weekends. P2 is restricted from 8am to midnight every day, so if you live there, check the council's zone and permit pages before the day and tell us where a visitor can stop.
Homes east of the station in the 2021 Census
East of the station, the census area covering Joslin Road, Ambleside and Vellacott Close (Thurrock 022C) had 721 households in 2021. Flats were 43.2% of homes and terraced houses 34.4%. Only 5.1% of households owned outright, while 54.1% had a mortgage and 6.7% were in shared ownership, nearly ten times the Thurrock share of 0.7%. Another 27.0% rented privately. Low outright ownership and a lot of shared ownership usually point to homes bought fairly recently, and an oven that came fitted with the flat.
For the private lets, letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, photos for the checkout file on request, and keys collected by arrangement for an empty flat.
The town became Purfleet-on-Thames in July 2020. The first regeneration scheme stalled when the council's development agreement with its partner was terminated, and Inside Housing reported on 21 February 2024 that the £75.1m government infrastructure grant for it had been cancelled. On 19 March 2026 Thurrock announced that its Cabinet had agreed to appoint Muse Places as preferred master developer for around 2,850 homes, subject to an updated masterplan securing planning consent and major public funding.
