Preston was a hamlet of two farms and a few cottages by the mid-15th century, and in 1851 it had 57 residents. Brent's archive history of Preston says the northern farm belonged to the Lyon family and was probably the birthplace of John Lyon, who founded Harrow School in 1572.
From farmhouses to flats
The suburb came in two waves. In the late 1920s a shopping parade went up at the junction of East Lane and Preston Road (built 1926 to 1929), along with the Preston Park Hotel, now simply the Preston. Most of the housing followed in the 1930s, and by 1936 Preston had between 6,000 and 7,000 people.
The second wave took the last of the old buildings. Lyon's Farm was demolished in 1960 and a council estate built on its site, Hillside farmhouse went in 1961, and Preston House came down in 1962 and 1963; blocks of flats replaced those last two. More post-war housing was built north and east of Preston Road.
The result is a mix. In the census area the House of Commons Library calls Preston Park and East Lane, 42.9% of the 2,918 households lived in a semi in 2021 and 34.3% in a purpose-built block of flats. Across Brent's Preston ward, 12.1% rented from a housing association.

Private renting is high here. In Preston Park and East Lane, 40.6% of households rented privately in 2021, against 24.8% who owned their home outright. Parking in Preston: event days and zone PH
Most of Preston's residential streets have no controlled parking zone on Brent's map, but almost all of the ward is inside the Wembley event day zone. On stadium event days only residents and businesses with an event day permit may park there, generally from 10am to midnight on residential roads.
The map also shows a new zone, PH, on Hirst Crescent in the south of the ward: controlled 10am to 9pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to midnight on event days. If you live there, the signs on the street give the hours and say who may park; the council's parking map shows the zone.

I live on Hirst Crescent, in zone PH. When is the easiest time?
On Brent's map the zone is controlled 10am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to midnight on event days, so a Sunday with no Wembley event is the clearest case. On other days check the signs for who may park.
Do I need to be at home?
For an empty flat, keys can be collected by arrangement with the landlord or agent. Otherwise someone needs to let us in and look at the lit oven at the end.
